The adult illustrated fantasy magazine has always been a centerpiece for erotic fantasy art with adult scenes featured throughout the comics in each issue.
The art portrayed has been historic in the sense that it semi-created the genre benchmark of erotic fantasy art. A lot of artists’ careers exploded in the process.
By today’s standards in adult fantasy art, Heavy Metal might seem tame. It is still the magazine that propelled the genre into the future. Artists like Boris Vallejo have helped make Heavy Metal covers so eye catching to begin with.
Moving forward, no one knows what the future holds for a genre of art that is considered dying/dead by some and changed by others. If a magazine like Heavy Metal can bring together such talent it might be a good idea to preserve the idea.
They say don’t judge a book by it’s cover but if it’s a Heavy Metal cover it helps.
